Rear extension of a characterful double fronted Victorian terrace
Dinah and Nigel are looking for a contemporary but distinctive rear extension to occupy an existing courtyard. The proposal needed to accommodate a new kitchen/dining area, sewing room and balcony overlooking the garden beyond. Many of the existing features to the rear courtyard are to retained including gallows bracket, stained glass doors and markings of a historic rear extension set out the building form.
Natural light to the courtyard is limited. A south-facing party wall is to be reduced in height to bring direct south light into the sewing space and a roof window to the double-height kitchen space will bring sunshine down into the ground floor.
Crittal windows, polished concrete floor and bespoke kitchen will give the space a casual, industrial feel. Maintenance free, charred timber cladding takes reference from the materiality of the existing loft space to the rear of the property.
